So I'm thinking I should start a list of common american-to-british 'translation' problems for those from across the pond who like writing Supernatural or CW RPF fic - sort of a handy checklist for people trying to write in the american idiom. Because as an inveterate and extremely invested lurker I see a lot of things in otherwise excellent SPN/RPF fic that road-bump me completely out of the story - grammar and spelling errors aside. (speaking of, oh god, please never to read of anyone lost in the throws of passion again!)
Thus,
- I'm from Texas, born and raised, and it's y'all, y'all ( not ya'll)
- Americans don't 'get on' with each other - we 'get along' with each other.
- We don't go 'round' to see people, either - we go 'over' to each others' places.
- We get grades in school, not marks.
- In the hospital, not in hospital.
- It's in college, not at college. Ditto in school, not at school ( when talking about attending, not personal location)
- (I can't resist - it's too strong...) Realize is spelled with a z, as are criticize, socialize and paralyze. Etc. etc.
- Guys in Texas drink Shiner or Rolling Rock or Corona (or Bud Light or MGD, etc.) - I've never heard of LoneStar beer (?)
I'm sure I'll think of lots more to add soon. This is really just to get my frustrations out of my head and vent a little. I can't say this stuff in comments, it's just comes off too petty and makes people feel nit-picked or something. Just, if
anyone reads this (hah!) and needs help americanizing ( or Texas-izing) something you're writing, just let me know 'cause I'd love to help.
